Fashion vs. Practicality...Can't we have both?

As mentioned in a previous post, I am a Mount Royal University student. I don't know if any of you managed to check the weather forecast before you left for work/school today, but I did. My day started at 6:30 this morning and it was -38 with the windchill. Needless to say, bundling up was a must. By the time I got to school, by about 7:30 in the morning, the weather hadn't warmed up much. Yet, as I parked and started to walk the 5/10min walk from the lot to school, the girl walking in front of me was wearing stilettos and tights (pantyhose) with a dress that went to mid-thigh and a leather jacket over top. That's all. I was wearing jeans, tank-top, long-sleeved shirt, sweater and heavy jacket...and I was still cold. At first thought all that came to my head was 'how much of an idiot can you be?'. I shook it off and continued my walk to school, whilst slightly laughing as she stumbled and slipped a few times on the ice. Mean, I know, but seriously.

Anyways, that was not the first outfit I saw like that today. It is currently -33 with the windchill...a little bit warmer than this morning, but honestly there isn't much of a difference between -27 to -37 for me. Maybe that's just me though, because I have counted (so far) a total of 5 people wearing thin tights (panythose), two of those wearing high-heels, two with high-waisted skirts, three with dresses, a couple with cardigans over top and only two with jackets. I can't say much on the jacket fact, as I am inside and likely, hopefully, they have lockers to place their jackets. One of these said people is my friend, and we're close enough that I can be straight-up blunt, so I asked her "What the hell are you wearing?". You realize that although it's March 1st...it's not spring or summer. To which she replied, "fashion is important; no matter the weather, or any other circumstance, I have to look good".

Can't we be fashionable and practical at the same time? I've heard so many people say they hate Uggs and all other winter boots are ugly...so flats or heels will have to do. Aldo seems to have some nice boots in my opinion and not at that bad of a cost either. Steve Madden is a little bit pricier but has beautiful shoes, that are practical too. I think there are lots of options out there that allow us to be both fashionable and practical and I honestly don't understand the battle between them.
All I know is that I enjoy my jeans and winter boots in -37 degree weather, and I still like the way I look.
Maybe you agree, maybe you don't. Just a thought to think about.

  1. I feel like I would have been that idiot, and in Montreal no less...where the winters are FAR COLDER! Somehow being crazy in Montreal seems to make more sense though??

Agreed, there are plenty of very nice boots out there. In fact, Canadian designers are being discovered for their boots!
